It all started during the French Revolution when the coins designer, Augustine Dupre found himself on the scaffolding and the next in line for the guillotine. Lightening struck nearby and Dupre escaped execution - a stroke of good luck he attributed to the gold angel in his pocket. Ever since that date, the Gold Angel has been converted as a "lucky" coin.
